The A.G. Russell One Hand Knife™ has been our best selling knife since the first ones were shipped in 1988. The handle, which is machined from a piece of solid stainless spring steel, works in conjunction with the blade to create an unusual locking system. This locking system, and the location of a thumb stud on both sides of the blade, allows the knife to be closed or opened one handed using either the right or left hand. That's why we call it the One Hand Knife™. While the knife measures only 3-7/8" closed, there is a full 3-1/8" of blade from the front of the handle to the tip of the blade and it measures nearly 7/8" wide at the kick. It is unusual to get this much blade in this size handle.
The original knife sold from 1988 to 2002 when our knifemaker had a hunting accident. We put those knives back in our catalog only last year when we began to complete knives from existing parts. Those parts (blade and handle) were made elsewhere and then completed in our own shop with the lock being fitted by hand. We have engineered out the expensive handwork in the lock resulting in our ability to offer higher quality blade steel for about the same price. The original knives had blades of first 440A and then AUS-8. We made a few with a wonderful Cowry Damascus that can only be compared to the ZDP-189 now available in this new American made version.
With very slight design changes, we have reintroduced this A. G. Russell™ classic with CPM-154 at 59-61 Rc. and ZDP-189 at 64-66 Rc. We have again brought a small quantity in each blade material into our own shop and are adding Desert Ironwood and India Stag. These will be available in limited quantities through the remainder of 2008 or until they are gone. Measures 3-7/8" closed and weighs approximately 3.0 oz. depending on the handle material. Except for the ZDP blade steel, these two are made in the U.S.A.
