During the time when a cutting tool was some form of stone, volcanic glass (obsidian) was the most prized of all the materials available. It enabled blades to be made that would cut better than any other material. Obsidian was so prized that men would travel hundreds of miles on foot to gather enough for a supply of tools. Landon Selby, the expert craftsman who has made our obsidian knives for years, uses the same materials and the same techniques to create all the models we offer.
For several years, Landon has made a skinner with a whitetail crown handle and one with an elk tine handle. For a short time he made a dagger with an American Bison bone handle. The dagger had to be discontinued because slaughter houses would not save enough bone for him. As a result, Landon has created a new handle made with Elk Horn tapers for both the Dagger and Skinner.
Each Obsidian knife is handmade and will vary in size, shape and color. While the blades are sharp enough to skin a deer, we do not recommend their use as a tool. They are fragile.
The combination of elk antler with the obsidian makes a really neat flaked blade knife, each one slightly different. Measures about 10" overall and weighs 4.5 to 5oz. Blades vary from about 4-3/4" to 5-1/4" in length. No sheath is provided. Sorry, we are not able to select knives by length.
